Jail for young woman caught with items to use in burglary

AN 18-year-old Westmeath woman who admitted being in possession of items to use in a burglary was given a three-month prison sentence when the matter was dealt with at Monaghan District Court.

Abbie Glynn of Lisclougher, Delvin, Co Westmeath pleaded guilty to being in possession of a crowbar, screwdriver, spanner, snips, gloves and cap with the intention of using them in a burglary at Killycard, Castleblayney, Co Monaghan on March 23, 2025.

Sergeant Lisa McEntee explained that Ms Glynn, who is currently on remand to appear at a court in Dublin on separate charges, was a co-accused in this case, along with a number of gentlemen who were still to be dealt with by the court.

There had been a report to gardaí about people banging at a house in Castleblayney, the sergeant told Judge Raymond Finnegan, and the items for use in a burglary were subsequently found in a car.

Ms Glynn had previous convictions for assault and robbery in 2023 (while she was still a minor) and for which she had received a 12-month probation bond, Sergeant McEntee added.

Upon being told by the defendant, whose solicitor was not in court, that she was expecting a prison sentence in respect of the separate charges to be dealt with at the Criminal Courts of Justice in Dublin, Judge Finnegan imposed the three-month sentence for the offence at Castleblayney.

He told her he did not expect that this would have any great impact on her upcoming case.

At the court in Monaghan two weeks earlier, Lee Hickey (29), also with an address at Lisclougher, Delvin, had been charged with having possession of the same articles for the purpose of burglary at Killycard, Castleblayney, on March 23.

Mr Hickey also faces charges that he drove with drugs in his system and had no insurance during the same incident. He was remanded to appear at Monaghan District Court later in October and decide on whether or not to plead guilty.
