Minister directs review of urban speed limits

Minister for Transport Darragh O’Brien directed local authorities to begin reviewing speed limits in built-up and urban areas, with a view to rolling out 30 km/h zones by March 31, 2027.

The move is part of the Government’s Road Safety Strategy, which aims to cut road deaths and serious injuries by 50% by 2030.

Minister O’Brien said the initiative will improve safety for all road users, especially pedestrians and cyclists, and support Ireland’s climate goals by encouraging more active travel. €20 million in funding has been allocated to help local authorities implement the changes.

Minister of State Seán Canney highlighted the reduced risk of fatality at lower speeds and noted that many cities and towns have already adopted 30 km/h limits in residential areas.

The changes will be introduced through local authority bye-laws, following public consultation. Each council will decide on speed limit updates based on local traffic conditions, and new signs will be installed to reflect any changes. Exceeding the posted limit will remain an offence.
