Ulster daters prioritise emotional availability and eco values

New research reveals that emotional availability tops the list of dating "green flags" for Ulster singles, with 51% saying it's the most attractive trait in a potential partner.

The study, commissioned by food waste app Too Good To Go, offers a snapshot of modern dating attitudes across Ireland, highlighting that Ulster daters are the most laid-back when it comes to conversational rules and first-date etiquette. Just half say it’s a red flag if their date talks only about themselves — the lowest figure in the country.

Interestingly, eco-conscious habits are gaining traction in the romantic arena. Nearly a quarter (24%) of Ulster daters say a no-waste attitude is a major green flag, and 16% are actively attracted to someone they view as a "sustainable king or queen." Only 14% consider a lack of concern for the environment a red flag, suggesting a more values-driven, yet forgiving, approach to dating.

That said, phone etiquette still matters — with 68% citing constant phone use on a date as a serious turn-off.

The findings suggest a growing interest in emotional intelligence and sustainability in the dating lives of Northern singles — and a shift toward substance over surface.
