Encirc appoints new Director of Energy Transition

Encirc has appointed Martin Doherty as its new Director of Energy Transition, to lead the company’s decarbonisation strategy and drive forward low-carbon energy projects across its operations.

Doherty brings over a decade of experience in sustainability, energy strategy, and the circular economy. He most recently served as Centre Director at the Centre for Advanced Sustainable Energy, where he focused on innovation in low-carbon technologies.

Sean Murphy, Managing Director at Encirc, said: “We’re delighted to welcome Martin. His expertise will be vital as we accelerate our carbon reduction efforts and continue to lead in sustainable glass manufacturing.”

Key initiatives under Doherty’s leadership will include:

- Hydrogen-Powered Furnaces: From 2029, Encirc aims to power its Cheshire site with low-carbon hydrogen and electricity via the HyNet industrial cluster.

- Biofuel & Recycled Glass: Following successful trials in Northern Ireland, Encirc is working with partners to transition its furnaces to low-carbon biofuels.

Doherty said: “UK manufacturing is at a turning point. I’m excited to join Encirc as it pioneers sustainable glass production. Glass is endlessly recyclable, and I’m proud to help shape its low-carbon future.”
