World Congress of Athletic Therapy marks thirteen years

The 13th World Congress of Athletic Therapy took place in Maynooth last week with event proceedings spearheaded by Cavan woman Lynn Allen.

From October 16-18 over 300 delegates from 11 nations descended on Maynooth, making the Glenroyal Hotel their base for the conference.

The project is entitled “Elevating and Uniting Sports Medicine” and the event was hosted by the Irish governing body for Certified Athletic Therapists, ARTI.

Ms Allen who is originally from Cavan however now resides outside Sligo town, played a significant role in organising the entire event as the Athletic Rehabilitation Therapists Ireland (ARTI) President, along with the organising committee.

Ms Allen stated the event was an unbelievable success and was delighted to showcase the trojan work being done by those working as professionals, students, researchers or academics in Athletic Therapy nationwide to an international audience.

Athletic Therapy courses are BSc Honours Degrees run in TUS Midlands, DCU, SETU Carlow and ATU Donegal.

Graduates generally work in private practice or within sports and elite team environments and are trained to a high level in musculoskeletal injury assessment, treatment and rehabilitation.

Delegates from as near and far as UK, US, Canada, Japan, Greece were brought together to collaborate and learn from each other.

During the event, talks and workshops took place over the three days in various topics such as, diagnostic ultrasound, aquatic therapy, empowering educators, concussion rehabilitation, women in sport, developing interdisciplinary teams, sickle cell traits, mental health in athletes, mitigating social determinants of health.
