Aon Focal Eile: Council provides language classes to staff

News that Cavan County Council is preparing an Irish language plan for staff and elected members - set to be rolled out next year - has been welcomed by Sinn Féin's Stiofán Conaty.

The Bailieborough-Cootehill MD representative had submitted a private member's question seeking an update on proposals to provide free Irish language classes for council staff and elected representatives, following a motion he brought forward in September 2024.

In response, the council’s executive stated: “Cavan County Council is currently in the process of preparing an Irish language plan for staff and elected members. It is envisaged that the plan will be rolled out in 2026. In relation to Irish language classes, we are currently exploring options with a view to offering them to councillors and staff commencing in the New Year.”

Addressing the response at the October meeting of Cavan County Council, Cllr Conaty said he was “encouraged” by the update, and welcomed the progress being made toward developing an Irish language plan within the local authority in 2026.

He said promoting the language was “important not only for individuals, but as a local authority”, especially as Ireland moves closer to becoming a “bilingual society”, noting a recent surge in interest among people learning the native language.

Supporting the initiative, Independent Ireland councillor Shane P. O’Reilly also proposed that the council consider offering sign language classes to staff members who may be interested.
