Election discourse has set country back- Maxwell TD
David Maxwell, Fine Gael TD for Cavan-Monaghan, has expressed concern over the weaponisation of religion during the recent election campaign, calling it a troubling trend that has set the country back.
He was particularly disheartened by social media posts from individuals he knew personally, which seemed to target Heather Humphreys’ religious background.
Maxwell also pointed out the contradiction within political parties advocating for a united, inclusive Ireland while allowing religious issues to dominate the conversation.
“The moment religion enters the discussion, it takes away from the substance of the campaign,” he stated. “It’s just not right.”
Reflecting on the election results, Maxwell acknowledged Humphreys' victory in Cavan-Monaghan, noting the result nationally was “disappointing”, particularly given the former Minister's impressive record as a “fantastic minister” and a “great TD” who “served everyone”.
He believed Humphreys took the brunt of criticism for the last decade of government, and Maxwell dismissed accusations of alleged dirty tactics.
“Everyone could question Heather, and that was fine. But the moment Catherine was questioned, it became labelled a smear campaign,” he said.
