Presidential election results for Cavan-Monaghan

"She will be my president, and I wish her all the best,” said Humphreys.

In a notable, though somewhat unsurprising departure from the national trend, Cavan-Monaghan was the only constituency in Ireland to return a victory for former local TD Heather Humphreys in the presidential race.

Despite this success on the local front, it was not enough to sway the overall national result, with Independent candidate Catherine Connolly ultimately set to be declared the tenth President of Ireland.

The official results, confirmed by local Returning Officer Joe Smith, show that Cavan-Monaghan had a total electorate of 107,048 across the two counties. Of this, 59,317 voters cast their ballots, resulting in a turnout of 55.41%.

While voter participation was relatively strong, a record number of 6,423 votes were deemed invalid, leaving 52,894 valid ballots to be counted.

Humphreys claimed victory in the constituency with a commanding 58.75% of the first-preference votes, totalling 31,075 votes.

Connolly secured the second most with 38.33% (20,273 votes), while Jim Gavin, despite withdrawing from the race, still managing to garner 2.92% of the vote, amounting to 1,546 votes.

Earlier, Humphreys visited Ballyhaise Agricultural College, where the counting took place, to thank her supporters and concede the election to Connolly.

“I believe Catherine will be a president for all of us. She will be my president, and I wish her all the best,” she said.
