Over 3,000 drivers detected speeding over bank holiday weekend
An extensive Garda Roads Policing Operation was in place over the October Bank Holiday weekend to ensure road safety.
During this period, there was one fatality on Irish roads, while seven serious collisions resulted in eight individuals sustaining serious injuries.
There were 153 arrests for suspected driving under the influence of an intoxicant meanwhile, more than 3,000 drivers were detected exceeding speed limits.
Notable speeds detected included:
91km/h in 50km/h zone in Santry, Co Dublin
127km/h in 60km/h zone on N15 at Stranorlar, Co Donegal
134km/h in 80km/h zone on R148 in Broadford, Co Kildare
174km/h in 100km/h zone on N24 at Caherconlish, Limerick
Three hundred Fixed Charge Notices were issued for using mobile phones, 140 FCN'C were issued to unaccompanied learner drivers, and more than 80 for not wearing seatbelts.
Eighty seven vehicles were seized from learner permit holders driving unaccompanied, while more than 345 vehicles were seized for having no tax or insurance
"An Garda Síochána continue to appeal to all road users to never drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs, to slow down and to always choose a speed that is appropriate to the driving conditions, to wear your seatbelt and keep your eyes always on the road," a spokesperson stated.
