Munchies march on in dramatic penalty shoot-out
Ulster Club JFC quarter-final
Munterconnaught 1-18
Clonmore 2-15
Munterconnaught win 3-0 on penalties
Munterconnaught's impressive season continues as the Ryefield men marched on to the semi-finals of the Ulster Club JFC with a dramatic penalty shoot-out win over Armagh champions Clonmore in the quarter-final today in the Athletic Grounds.
Enda and Eoin O'Shea each landed a free and a two-pointer from play, with Stephen Sheridan and Corey Gilsenan also on the mark, as the Munchies made a brilliant start.
With the wind at their backs, they were 0-8 to 0-0 up after 18 minutes and at half-time it was 0-9 to 0-4.
Enda O'Shea (free) and Corey Gilsenan made it 0-11 to 0-5 with 20 minutes remaining but the Armagh men struck for two goals and forced extra time.
Down to 14 men after Tadhg Morrissey was sent off, the Munchies opened a four-point lead with scores from Sean Nolan, Eoin O'Shea (two-pointer) and Shane Hanly.
But seven unanswered points in the second half of extra time helped Clonmore lead by three.
Deep in injury time, Munterconnaught worked a superb goal, moving the ball crisply from goalkeeper John McCabe all the way through to sub Ryan Gilsenan, who rattled the net with an emphatic and most impressive finish.
That dramatic major forced penalties. In an extraordinary twist, sub goalkeeper Charles Baugh stepped in and saved two successive penalties (the third was sent over the bar) as Enda O'Shea, Sean Nolan and Kevin Hendrick all found the net to power the Cavan champions into the last four in Ulster.
