Sadness of passing of football icon 'Nudie' Hughes
News
Legendary Monaghan footballer Eugene 'Nudie' Hughes has died at the age of 67.
A three-time All-Star and widely regarded as Monaghan’s greatest ever player, Hughes was diagnosed with cancer in 2018. He faced the illness with remarkable positivity, inspiring all who met him and offering encouragement to many others along the way.
The Castleblayney Faughs icon was known for his likeability and charisma and was a popular figure all over Ireland. After his retirement, he was a familiar voice on Northern Sound radio where his knowledge of the game and his personality shone through.
In 2024, Hughes was recognised by the Gaelic Players Association with a Lifetime Achievement Award.
He made history in 1979 as Monaghan’s first All-Star winner and claimed two more in 1985 and 1989. Remarkably, he earned those accolades in both defence and attack, his first as a corner-back and the latter two as a corner-forward.
Each of his All-Star seasons coincided with Monaghan winning the Ulster title, and in 1985 he also helped the county capture the National Football League.
Hughes added a Railway Cup medal with Ulster in 1984 and won two Ulster club titles with his beloved Castleblayney Faughs.
Monaghan GAA paid tribute to one of their most celebrated figures.
“It is with deep and profound sadness that Monaghan GAA has learned of the passing of one of our greatest ever players, Eugene ‘Nudie’ Hughes – a true legend of Monaghan football and a three-time All-Star recipient.
“Nudie’s contribution to our county, both on and off the field, was immense. His skill, passion, and leadership inspired generations, and his name will forever be synonymous with Monaghan’s proud footballing tradition.
“Nudie fought his illness with immense courage and dignity, just as he played the game – with heart and determination.”
TD Matt Carthy paid tribute to the late Mr Hughes this morning.
“We will never see the likes of Nudie Hughes again," he said.
“A football legend, a community man to his finger tips, an inspiration to younger generations and a great character throughout his life. Nudie Hughes represented the best of Co Monaghan. His loss will be deeply felt by many Irish people all over the world.
“On behalf of Monaghan Sinn Féin I extend our deepest sympathies to his wife Teresa, sons Ciaran and Conor, to his wider family and to all who loved Nudie, especially his friends in Castleblayney Faughs and County Monaghan GAA.
