Tenth Cavan Monaghan Science Festival is back!

THE Cavan Monaghan Science Festival is back for its tenth year!

And to celebrate this achievement, organisers have pulled put all the stops when it comes to this year’s line-up of events which is designed to engage the minds of all ages and interests.

What other festival combines storm chasing with cheesemaking and talks on peri-menopause and Generative AI and medicine?

So many of the events planned for Cavan like the saving seeds talk tutorial in Dowra, the beeswax cosmetics workshop in Lough Sheelin and Sustainable Floristry in Swanlinbar are free. However, booking is essential.

And, if those workshops are not science-y enough for you then you can explore how VR can support public services at a talk in the Johnston Central Library on Thursday, November 13; or go along to hear John Gibbons the environmental journalist discuss his new book ‘The Lie of the Land’ and create hurricanes, tornadoes and more in a high-energy family show by Mark the Science Guy in the Townhall Arts Centre on Tuesday, November 11.

Events

The award-winning festival, jointly organised by Cavan County Council and Monaghan County Council, with support from Taighde Éireann – Research Ireland, will take place from November 8–15 and features over 50 events, with 28 events taking place in Cavan.

Other events sure to have a wide appeal include a talk on ‘The Psychology of Half-Time Talks’, and ‘Still Me’ with Dr Sabina Brennan, who will share practical insights to help persons with dementia and their families to live better with the condition.

As ever, the festival will host a special Family Fun Day in both counties, with the Cavan Fun Day, Saturday, November 8 from 11am until 4pm.

Inspiring

Cathaoirleach of Cavan County Council, John Paul Feeley, said the Science Festival reflects a greater interest in STEM subjects among people of all ages.

“This inspiring and entertaining festival has gone from strength to strength in the past decade,” Cllr Feeley said. “While earlier iterations focused on children and young people, the festival has now broadened its appeal to include all ages and demographic.”

Meanwhile, County Librarian Emma Clancy said: “That the festival has reached its tenth anniversary is testament to its popularity.

“There is something for everyone, young and old, and I encourage everyone to check out our programme to find an event that appeals to them”.
