Undertaking the Camino for local addiction supports
Local woman Karen Coyle has completed a powerful personal and fundraising journey, walking a section of the renowned Camino de Santiago in aid of the Family Addiction Support Network.
Her inspiring effort has not only raised much-needed funds but also awareness of the critical impact addiction has on families and loved ones.
The Cavan town woman’s journey began in Tui, on the Spanish Portuguese border, and took her along the Camino de Santiago, a historic pilgrimage route that leads to the shrine of the apostle Saint James in Santiago de Compostela, Spain.
This stretch of the Camino is known for its physical demands, including a climb toward Santiago. The Camino represents endurance, purpose, and transformation which are all qualities reflected in Karen’s dedication to supporting families affected by substance misuse in her own Cavan community.
“Walking the Camino was a wonderful and unforgettable experience,” Karen said, describing it as “physically challenging but so meaningful”.
“I’m deeply grateful to everyone who supported me along the way. I want to sincerely thank my family, friends, neighbours, the generous local Cavan businesses whose sponsorship made this possible, and my fellow Camino walkers who also sponsored me.
“Your kindness will go a long way in helping those who need it most,” Karen added.
Challenges
Through her trek, Karen raised vital funds that will go directly toward FASN’s work in counties Cavan and Monaghan. These funds will go towards one-to-one support for family members navigating the challenges of addiction within the family, professional counselling and educational programmes aimed at understanding addiction and learning tools for resilience and recovery.
If you or someone you know is affected by a loved one’s alcohol or drug use, FASN welcomes self-referrals.
