This has been a year of real progress for Cootehill, with exciting developments across business, community, infrastructure, and sport.
Key projects
Cootehill’s retail and enterprise scene continues to evolve. Boyle for Men, a long-established business on Bridge Street, completed a full revamp and shopfront upgrade this year, and it’s looking fantastic.
Work has commenced on the redevelopment of the former Bank of Ireland premises on Market Street. This landmark project will create a vibrant new community facility including a dedicated Youth Space, a Changing Places room for public use, community and tourism exhibition areas, training and counselling rooms, board spaces, and a community garden to the rear.
PQE Ltd celebrated a major milestone with the opening of its state-of-the-art engineering facility at Cootehill Business and Technology Park on the Cavan Road. The company’s continued growth highlights Cootehill’s strength as a centre for manufacturing and innovation.

A 13-unit housing development has also commenced at the Fair Green, helping to meet growing housing demand. Cootehill Chamber is proud to have representation on four of the five Cavan County Council Strategic Policy Committees (SPCs) for 2024–2029, ensuring that the voice of local business and community is heard in key policy areas such as economic development, housing, environment, and community affairs.
As Cootehill’s Tercentenary celebrations draw to a close, the town reflects on a wonderful year of events marking 300 years since the granting of its market charter. Two final events round off the programme; the Jonathan Smyth book launch in Cootehill Library on Thursday, November 27, and the Patrick Cassidy photo exhibition in Cootehill Library on Thursday, December 4, from 7–8pm.
Copies of the Cootehill 300 Calendar remain available from Hannigan’s Bar & Grocery, and the committee recently donated €200 to support the Drumnaveil Residents’ Halloween Fireworks Party, a small gesture that captures the spirit of community that defined the year.
Christmas in Cootehill is set to be as magical as ever with the Santa Visit taking place at St Michael’s Hall on Saturday November 22 from 12–5pm with tickets available on www.cootehill.ie Expect a full day of family entertainment including disco, face painting, and refreshments.
Entertainment will be provided by Tullyvin Musical Society and Cootehill CCE on the Gig Rig.
It’s been an exceptional year for Cootehill’s sporting community. Cootehill Harps AFC earned promotion to Division 2 and celebrated major youth successes, with U12 Girls winning both their league and the SFAI Ulster Cup. Several young players progressed to top clubs including Dundalk FC, Dungannon Swifts, and Athlone Town, while former local stars are now playing professionally in Scotland, Italy, and for Ireland’s U17 World Cup team.
Cootehill ic LGFA, only four years established, continues to flourish with over 120 members and teams from U6 to senior level. The Senior Ladies captured the Division 6 Spring League title, while both U14 and U16 teams reached their respective finals, a remarkable achievement for such a young club.
