Garda station in track for 2026 opening
Minister for Justice visits Bailieborough
The new €19M Garda station in Bailieborough is on track for completion by early 2026, with significant redevelopment already underway.
The project will integrate the historic National Irish Bank building on Main Street, a protected structure, with a modern three-storey facility behind it.
Work began in January 2022 and further modifications, approved in 2023, expanded the project to include a neighbouring property. This extension will provide vital amenities such as additional parking, secure storage for bicycles and motorbikes, and a dedicated Garda courtyard.
Minister for Justice Jim O’Callaghan recently visited the site and expressed his satisfaction with the progress, stating he hoped to return early next year for the station’s official opening.“A huge amount of work has been done,” Minister O’Callaghan told The Anglo-Celt following a tour with local TD and Minister of State, Niamh Smyth.
Regarding the current Garda station, located in an 1880s RIC barracks on Barrack Street, he said the facility was “simply not appropriate” for either Garda members or the public and emphasised the necessity of the new station, calling it an “outstanding addition” not just for Bailieborough, but for the entire division.
The current station, condemned in the O’Higgins Commission report for its “deplorable” conditions, will be reassessed for alternative state or community use before any future sale.
