Homes ‘very close’ to flooding
Homes and sports amenities in the Canningstown area were “very close” to water during recent flooding events were raised as a concern by Cllr Adrian Rogers at the recent Bailieborough Cootehill MD meeting.
He asked the council if measures could be put in place to “help protect” homes and property “in danger” of flooding.
The Knockbride football pitch and homes came “very close” to flooding, meanwhile roads such as the Kells road out of Bailieborough experienced a “big flood” as did the Virginia road out of Bailieborough. He noticed that the gutters along roadsides are “full” with “grass growing out” of them, meanwhile those at Brady’s corner in Kingscourt would “need a pair of wellies” if they chose to walk on the footpath during times of heavy rain.
Cllr Stiofán Conaty seconded the motion, adding that the L6024 near Ballyhaise was “impassable”. He said the road was raised in the past, however it is “down again”.
Cllr Val Smith also supported the motion, as did Cllr Niall Smith.
Area Manager Clinton Mulligan said “where possible” the council “do try to fix” such flooding issues, however in some cases it is “limited” what they can do as the issue is on “private property”.
He agreed that flooding is a “big issue” and the local authority must look at sourcing funding for remedial works. He gave the example of municipal district funding, climate action funding or the bridge rehabilitation scheme.
