Bereaved families left wondering after Kenova

Senator O'Reilly demands evidence of Dublin Monaghan bombings be handed over to Irish authorities

The families of those murdered by Loyalist paramilitaries in the Dublin Monaghan bombings are still left wondering following the publication of the final Kenova report.

That’s according to Aontu Senator Sarah O’ Reilly who says while the report is ‘damning and uncovers British state collusion with loyalist paramilitaries in the ‘Glenanne Gang’ and outlines the lengths the British state went to in order to protect Stakeknife, its intelligence source within the IRA, it falls short of conclusively showing collusion between the paramilitary groups involved in the May attacks of 1974 which killed 34 people.

“My heart goes out to the relatives of those murdered in those cowardly and savage attacks in Dublin and Monaghan. ‘The Justice for the Forgotten’ group has fought a tireless and determined campaign to find out the truth about exactly happened on that horrific day.

“While the Kenova Report states that the UVF (Ulster Volunteer Force) was indeed capable of carrying out the atrocity ‘independently’, Operation Denton clearly states that while no evidence of collusion was found, it cannot be ‘categorically excluded’.

The Aontú senator observed how this ambiguity will continue to raise questions for the relatives of those killed in the 1974 bombings.

“Given that ‘Operation Denton’ clearly shows that there was clear collusion between some members of the UDR and RUC with loyalist paramilitaries in the North, it seems utterly improbable that the Dublin and Monaghan bombings were not subject to some level of collusion as importantly, this report says that it is unlikely that ‘material records’ would have been retained.“

Senator O'Reilly insists the passage of time cannot be used as a shield to protect those who murdered innocent people.

“The Irish Government must now demand that every shred of information and evidence presented to Kenova is handed over to Irish investigators. Families whose relatives were murdered, and survivors deserve no less.“
