Cavan to benefit from €12.9M in property tax in 2026
Local Property Tax (LPT) is likely to increase next year for the majority of homeowners.
Revenue has completed the process of writing to some 1.5 million homeowners nationwide, asking them to re-evaluate their property’s value.
This re-evaluation will be used to determine the amount of Local Property Tax homeowners will pay for the next five years.
House price inflation has increased by around 25% nationally since the last time owners were asked to value their properties for LPT.
For 2025, three in four households in County Cavan paid the lower rate of LPT of €103.50 a year, or about €1.13 per month.
While the tax is expected to rise for most people, the increase itself should be relatively small.
This is because the valuation bands for properties have been broadened and the base rate of LPT has been reduced.
By November, homeowners were required to revalue their properties.
This revaluation will be used to determine the amount homeowners owe for Local Property Tax for the next five years.
LPT was first introduced in 2013 to provide a stable income to local authorities in the country.
Councils have the ability to increase or reduce the tax by 15%.
Cavan County Council expects to receive almost €12.9M from the LPT fund in 2026 to help fund its expenditure in areas such as roads and housing. This amount includes monies collected in the county and some €7.7M of an ‘equalisation contribution’ from the exchequer/Local Government Fund.
