Family syndicate scoop €17M Euromillions jackpot in Lidl

EXCLUSIVE

The winners of the staggering €17M EuroMillions jackpot a father, son and daughter syndicate from Cavan Town, this newspaper can exclusively reveal.

The humble two-line Quick Pick ticket was purchased on the day of the draw, December 12, in the Lidl store in Cavan Town.

The modest Friday flutter has now erupted into one of the biggest lottery celebrations the county has ever seen.

Ahead of travelling to the National Lottery Headquarters in Dublin, the lucky trio issued a brief statement to this newspaper through James M Donohoe & Company solicitors in Cavan Town.

“The family are over the moon. This is a life changing sum of money to win. They are absolutely delighted,” said firm lead, Jim Donohoe.

The ticket holder only checked his receipt last Monday afternoon (December 15) by scanning it at Eason on Main Street in Cavan Town, after news emerged the jaw-dropping jackpot had been won locally. He then contacted the local solicitors, and the ticket was immediately stashed for safekeeping overnight under lock and key at AIB in Cavan Town.

On Tuesday afternoon (December 16), with all family members present, the winners signed the back of the ticket before formally making contact with National Lottery HQ. The golden ticket was then formally verified, and at time of going to print, the lucky family were expected to travel to Dublin to collect their cheque.

Eimear O’Sullivan, Corporate Affairs Director at Lidl Ireland, confirmed that the €17M Cavan EuroMillions ticket is the largest jackpot ever sold by Lidl in Ireland. The retailer’s previous record was set in June, when a €6.7 million National Lottery ticket was purchased at its Ballymun store in Dublin.

“This one truly tops it all,” she said outside Lidl’s Cavan store on Ballinagh Road on Tuesday morning, as a brass band played and champagne corks popped.

“We’re thrilled to have sold the winning ticket to a lucky customer just in time for Christmas. The excitement among our store team is electric - they’re delighted to have played even a small role in making someone’s dream come true. It’s a life-changing sum, and we couldn’t be happier.”

The fairytale win marks Ireland’s second EuroMillions jackpot of 2025, following the €250 million prize won last June. More recently, another Cavan player became a millionaire after winning €1 million in the Daily Million draw on November 30. In June, a local player also secured €500,000 in the EuroMillions Plus draw by matching all five numbers.

Cavan has seen its share of major lottery successes in recent years. In January 2020, a record-breaking syndicate of 295 Drumgoon residents pooled their tickets to become lottery royalty and share a €256,142 EuroMillions prize.
