Man charged in connection with fatal crash on N2

Gardaí continue to appeal for witnesses as road remains closed

A man will appear at a special sitting of Monaghan District Court this evening on charges related to a fatal road traffic accident on the N2 at Castleblayney yesterday (Thursday), December 18th.

Gardaí continue to investigate the collision involving a HGV and a car, which resulted in the death of Emma Mackarel (née McClean) from Latgallan, Clones.

The road remains closed this evening while efforts are ongoing to safely remove the obstructing vehicle.

A man in his 50s was arrested in connection with this collision has since been charged. He will appear before a special sitting of Monaghan District Court at 7pm this evening.

Investigations are ongoing. Update to follow later.

This was the second fatal traffic collision to occur in Monaghan in less than a week after a male pedestrian, aged in his 60s, was knocked down and killed by a lorry in Monaghan Town last weekend, Saturday, December 13.

Gardaí are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed this latest collision on the N2 to contact them.

Road users who were travelling on the N2 between Castleblayney and Broomfield between 7:30am and 8:15am, and who may have camera footage (including dash-cam), are asked to make this footage available to investigating Gardaí.
