Increased funding brings hope for 2026

Fine Gael TD David Maxwell.

As we approach the Christmas season, I would like to sincerely thank the people of Cavan for the support, encouragement and goodwill you have shown me during my maiden year representing you in Dáil Éireann. It has been an absolute honour to serve our county, and I am deeply grateful for the trust placed in me by communities across Cavan.

2025 has been a year of progress and achievement for County Cavan. I am proud to have worked with local representatives, community groups and government colleagues to secure increased investment in our road network, including long-awaited improvements to regional and local roads across the constituency. Important progress has also been made in housing, with new social and affordable homes advancing in towns such as Cavan, Bailieborough, Cootehill and Ballyjamesduff.

This year also saw increased funding for rural development and local enterprise, supporting small businesses, farmers and voluntary organisations that are the backbone of our communities. Investment in healthcare and education continued, with funding delivered for local health services and school upgrades to meet growing demand. I also want to congratulate Cavan on its success in the Tidy Towns awards, which reflects the pride, hard work and strong community spirit of volunteers right across the county.

However, it would be wrong not to acknowledge that this has also been a difficult year for many families, particularly due to the tragic loss of life on our roads. As we head into the busy Christmas and New Year period, I would urge everyone to think about safety when getting into their car. Please slow down, wear your seatbelt, and stay off your phone while driving. A moment’s distraction can change lives forever, and nothing is more important than getting home safely to those who love you.

Christmas is a time for reflection, gratitude and community. I hope it brings comfort and joy to every household, especially to those who may be facing challenges or loss.

I look forward to continuing to work hard on behalf of the people of Cavan and Monaghan in the year ahead. I wish you and your families a peaceful, safe and happy Christmas, and every good wish for health and happiness in the New Year.
