The Anglo-Celt Review of the year – March
‘We’re entitled to as good a road as the next man’
THIRTEEN neighbours gathered on a nameless road outside Cavan Town to express concerns over recurring potholes and water drainage on their local road. The sign, indicating the L5554, is non-existent, something that makes having guests over difficult for the 10 households living on the rural lane. Upon entering the road in the townland of Drumbo, The Anglo-Celt was greeted by neighbours each of whom want to see their road resurfaced and made safe for both motorists and walkers alike.
SOSAD shock
“WE are fighting every day to keep SOSAD Ireland open, but the reality is that some services, like this one, simply cannot be maintained under the current circumstances.”
Those words formed part of a statement released by SOSAD announcing that, due to a lack of funding, it had no choice but to close its messaging service from March 4. The decision came amid confusion over whether interim funding was promised by the previous Minister for Mental Health, as claimed by Cavan co-ordinator Christine Wynne.
Jailed for his part in armed attack on home
A MEMBER of an armed “gang” who “terrified” a local mum by invading her home, forcing her to bar herself and her two infant children in the bathroom for safety, has been jailed for five years with two years suspended. Furthermore, within four weeks of his release, Krzysztof Bugaj (24) has been ordered to leave Ireland. So far, he has served 13 months behind bars having failed to take up bail. With good behaviour, he was told by Judge John Aylmer, he could be back on the streets in little over two years.
New special school to open in Castleblayney
IT’S hoped that a new school for pupils with special needs in Monaghan will be open for the 2025-2026 academic year, however concerns remain over its location. An update on the project was provided to members of the Cavan Monaghan Education and Training Board at their meeting
Hawe house knocked
WHEN the 16-cylinder roar of the Hitachi excavator eventually drums to a halt, work done, the silence left in its wake is almost deafening. There is scant birdsong and a sprig of sunlight cast across the small patch where the Hawe family house once stood. It’s broken by the sight-line of trees that seem to loom larger now than before. The house at Barcony, about five kilometres south of Ballyjamesduff Town, was once home to Clodagh (née Coll; 39), her three young boys - Liam (13), Niall (11), and Ryan (6), and to husband and dad Alan (40) who killed them before taking his own life on August 28, 2016.
Eirgrid meeting
A MEETING was held between Eirgrid and the three local planning authorities - Cavan, Monaghan and Meath county councils - with regard to the development of the North South Interconnector.
The meeting was one of the few developments of the controversial project which had been expected to progress in 2025.
