Ben embraces ‘new normal’ following accident in Australia

Just before Christmas the Galligan family shared a “positive” update on son and brother Ben, who was left seriously injured in Australia after a road collision.

The Crosserlough native sustained life changing injuries, however in recent weeks his recovery journey took a “big step forward”.

The update was shared just before Christmas on the GoFundMe page set up after the accident on October 14, to support his recovery.

Since then, nearly €214,000 has been raised after a huge amount of support from several local communities.

“We’re very happy to share another positive update on Ben’s recovery,” his family said.

They shared that Ben was transferred to Fiona Stanley Hospital in Perth last month, which specialises in rehabilitation, where the Cavan man will continue the next phase of his recovery.

“This move is a big step forward and reflects the progress he has been making,” they revealed.

“Over the past couple of weeks, Ben has had his tracheostomy removed and is now talking all of the time, something we’re all delighted about.”

They said he is also back eating food again, which they described as “a huge milestone for him after a long period without it”.

Recovery

“Safe to say, he’s been especially happy to enjoy some familiar and tasty food again.”

Meanwhile, the family also shared that Ben is continuing to progress “very well” with physiotherapy.

“He has regained a lot of strength and is now able to walk around independently, which is incredible progress.

“He does still have his halo head brace in place for his spinal injury, but overall his mobility and confidence continue to improve day by day.”

Meanwhile, the construction worker was allowed return to his home in Perth for a couple of hours over Christmas.

“Being able to mark Christmas in this way means a lot to him.”

The family also shared a “huge thank you” to Pius’s Polo Grounds pub in Kilnaleck who recently organised a quiz for Ben, and to those who took part in a carol singing event for him.

“The kindness and effort shown has been truly humbling.”

Despite everything, Ben’s family are delighted to share that his “sense of humour and trademark charm are very much still there”.

“He has been enjoying all the visits, messages, and laughs along the way.

“He asked that we pass on his thanks to everyone for their support.”

As a final word, Ben’s family shared the following message to everybody who has supported their fundraiser: “Thank you again to everyone who has donated, visited, shared the fundraiser, or kept Ben in their thoughts.

“We’re so grateful that Ben will be able to enjoy Christmas while continuing to embrace this new normal, surrounded by incredible support.”
