Plan for village shop
Plans have been submitted to transform the former landmark pub, Con J. Smith’s, on Main Street, Butlersbridge, into a village shop.
Brian and Mary Johnston are seeking planning permission for a change of use for the existing off-licence to a hairdressers, while converting the main public house and residential areas into a new standalone retail unit at ground floor, along with another additional shop space.
The proposed ground-floor shop will include staff facilities, an office, toilets, a deli, off-licence, and retail space.
There are also plans to convert the existing first-floor residential area into two one-bedroom apartments.
Alterations will include updates to existing elevations, new signage, and all associated site works.
The designs have been prepared by Michael Fitzpatrick Architects, Butlersbridge.
The applicants own Johnson Agriculture Supplies, which is located across from the pub.
Con J. Smith’s Bar & Lounge, one of Cavan’s historic pubs, was placed on the market in 2023 with an asking price of €375,000.
Established in 1936 by Danny and Margaret Smith, the pub was rebuilt in 1949. Following Danny Smith’s passing in 1965, Con Smith, notable in the sporting community for his achievements with the Cavan GAA, took over the business with his wife Agatha, adding the lounge in 1973.
Con passed away in 1990, and Agatha continued to run the pub for many years thereafter.
