‘Stop posting’ holiday snaps
Thirty-two people charged with burglary in Cavan and Monaghan in the first nine months of 2025.
People are being advised to “stop posting pictures” on social media while they are on holiday as new figures revealed there were 32 people before the courts in Cavan and Monaghan for burglary in the period.
From January to September 2025, 15 people in Cavan and 13 in Monaghan appeared in court charged with burglary offences.
A further three people in Cavan and one in Co Monaghan were sent forward for trial to their respective circuit courts during the same period.
Ireland South MEP and former barrister Cynthia Ní Mhurchú obtained the figures from the Irish Courts Service.
Nationally, 1,187 individuals were before the country’s district courts for burglary offences in the first nine months of 2025 and a further 347 people were sent forward for trial in the circuit court.
The local numbers are marginally down on a pro-rata basis when compared with 2024 when 28 people were charged in the courts in Cavan and 16 in Monaghan for burglary related offences in the year.
Cynthia Ní Mhurchú appeals to people to “stop posting holiday pictures on social media” and to look out for any suspicious vehicles or activity, especially in “very rural parts of the country during the dark winter months, which, is a peak time for burglaries”.
The Ireland South MEP also called for a range of measures including an end to the practice of letting burglars out on temporary release from prison.
Cynthia Ní Mhurchú points out that as of June 23, 2025, 38 burglars were on temporary release according to figures from the Irish Prison Service.
She also called for targeted supports to protect communities including more funding for community CCTV and the installation of security alarms in particular for those who are living alone in rural Ireland.
