Former Stewart's Shop set to become vibrant community hub

Cavan County Council is set to purchase the former Stewart's Shop in Killeshandra and re-develop it for community use.

Funding of €240,000 has been awarded this morning by the Minister for Rural and Community Development for the purchase of the former shop.

The funding is being provided under the Building and Land Acquisition Measure of the Town and Village Renewal Scheme.

It is intended that the property will be repurposed as a multi-use community space incorporating a cultural centre that will support the return of Irish language and dance classes.

The grounds to the rear of the property will be used to extend the existing community garden and the produce will be sold in the farmers’ market. The outbuildings will be repurposed for use by the local men’s and hen’s shed and tidy towns group.

Stewart's Shop is an 18th century building situated in a prominent position on Main Street in Killeshandra, and played an important role in the traditional retail life of the town up to its closure in 2005.

Cavan County Council’s will first maintain the integrity of the building, restoring its traditional appearance and the overall streetscape.

"I compliment the local community groups who work extremely hard in the best interests of Killeshandra,” Deputy Brendan Smith stated.

Deputy Smith thanked his Fianna Fáil colleague Minister Dara Calleary for the delivery of this funding.

“Local amenities such as this have been upgraded through the hard work and commitment of the local people supported by different government grant schemes and this work continues.

“I have been very glad to support that work and I also commend Cavan County Council on their commitment to this particular project and on their submission of the detailed and successful application," stated Brendan Smith TD.

Meanwhile, Senator Robbie Gallagher stated: “I look forward to it being up and running so it can breathe new life into the heart of Killeshandra, as it had done for many years before."
