Vigilance urged this weekend as flood risk remains

Cavan County Council is urging the public to be vigilant this weekend as water levels remain high and additional rainfall could see further flooding.

While heavy rain is not forecast in Cavan and no warning is in place for the Breffni county, the water levels are such that heavy rainfall in neighbouring counties may have an impact in parts of Cavan.

Road users in particular are advised not to drive through flood waters – waters that appear shallow can be deeper than they appear. If the road ahead is flooded, turn around and choose another route.

Road users should also be vigilant for washed out roads, earth slides, broken water or sewer mains, loose or downed electrical wires, and fallen or falling objects.

Cavan County Council’s Severe Weather Assessment Team (SWAT) will be monitoring conditions throughout and Municipal District crews, Civil Defence, and the fire service are on hand to assist if necessary.

Cathaoirleach of Cavan County Council Councillor John Paul Feeley said: “I would urge all members of the public to be wary of the risk of flooding. This weekend presents a unique scenario where Cavan may not see any significant rainfall, but may experience flooding nonetheless. As such, extreme care is advised on the roads in particular.”

The council's out of hours emergency phone number is 087 611 8116. For Gardaí, Ambulance, or Fire Brigade, dial 999 or 112.
