Gardaí issue bank holiday road safety update

Among the notable top speeds detected by An Garda Síochána over the bank holiday weekend was a motorist caught driving at 86kph in a 50kph zone in Monaghan.

The vehicle was travelling on the R183, Doohamlet, Co. Monaghan, and the motorist is among nearly 3500 others who were caught speeding as part of the enhanced road safety and traffic enforcement campaign over the St Brigid’s Bank Holiday.

In Trim, another driver was detected travelling at 123kph in a 60kph zone on the R154.

The highest volume of detections was on Bank Holiday Monday, with over 800 speeding detections.

Meanwhile, one hundred and ninety drivers were arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of an intoxicant.

Nearly 400 drivers were detected for driving while using a mobile phone, and over 660 vehicles were detained by members of An Garda Síochána, 50% for no insurance.

Over the course of the St. Brigid’s Bank Holiday Weekend 2026 there were two fatalities as a result of two fatal traffic collisions on Irish roads and fourteen serious injury collisions resulting in 15 serious injuries.

Thirteen people have dies on Irish roads to date in 2026.

An Garda Síochána continues to appeal to all road users: don’t drive distracted, don’t drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs, slow down and always drive within the posted legal speed limit and/ or at an appropriate speed to the prevailing conditions and always wear a seatbelt.
