New ESB Substation for energy security for Cavan Town
ESB Networks has lodged plans for a powerful new electrical substation at Killygarry, a proposal that looks to future-proof the town’s power supply and potentially unlock growth for decades to come.
The proposed Killygarry 38kV Substation, to be built at the Cavan Business & Technology Park on the Dublin Road, will deliver a huge increase in transformer capacity, shoring up the reliability of electricity for homes, businesses and new developments across the county town and surrounding areas.
With Cavan’s population climbing and demand surging from new housing, commercial expansion, and the push to meet Ireland’s net-zero ambitions, the existing Derrycramph and Cavan substations are nearing capacity. Together they provide 30 MVA, leaving just 1.2 MVA of capacity before planning limits are reached.
The new proposed development will add 20 MVA, significantly easing the strain on the network and boost energy security across the county town and surrounding areas.
The multi-million euro project will occupy nearly two hectares, featuring two high-capacity 38/20 kV transformers and state-of-the-art Gas Insulated Switchgear (GIS) technology.
ESB Networks emphasises that the substation is about preparing Cavan for decades of growth, supporting new housing, expanding industry, and enterprise at the Business & Technology Park.
Construction, expected to last 70 weeks if approved, will be carefully phased to minimise disruption.
Environmental and ecological surveys carried out in October 2025 revealed no protected species on site, and measures will be implemented to safeguard wildlife during sensitive periods.
A decision on the project is due by March 19.
