Two arrests after sergeant attacked with broken bottle

Long-serving garda forced to flee for his safety.

A senior garda narrowly avoided serious injury following a violent incident in Cavan Town last weekend during involving two intoxicated males - one of whom was armed with a smashed bottle.

The long-serving sergeant attempted to intervene in a disturbance at the junction of Farnham Road and Abbey Street on Saturday evening, February 7, when the situation escalated.

Forced to flee for his safety, the experienced sergeant retreated into nearby taxi offices but not before he had been knocked to the ground and subjected to serious of vicious kicks to the head and body.

During the ordeal, the older assailant also brandished a broken bottle, with taxi rank staff forced to come to the aid of the embattled sergeant. Back-up was called, and both suspects were arrested at the scene.

The adult male has since been charged, and is due to appear before Cavan District Court later this month. A juvenile, aged in his teens, will be dealt with through the Juvenile Liaison Office.
