Call for traffic calming measures

A call was made for a traffic calming policy for towns and villages across county Cavan at the February meeting of Cavan Council Council.

"One policy that is the same for every town and village," Cllr TP O'Reilly (FG) said when making the call.

Cllr Clifford Kelly (FF) supported the motion, adding that the four roads leading into Kingscourt are "all down a hill".

"One lorry drove down and into the filling station," he told the meeting.

Agreement came from Cllr Winston Bennett (FG), who also believes every town should have "the same" calming measures.

The Ballinagh councillor said he doesn't like ramps, however made a campaign for "raised pedestrian crossings" at the entrance to towns.

Cllr Brendan Fay (Ind) described speed cushions as "useless", and also supported the use of raised pedestrian crossings.

The motion also received support from Cllr Noel Connell (SF) and Cllr Trevor Smith (FG).

Director of Services Paddy Connaughton said the council's road design team are in the process of looking at a policy but "it will take some time to do".

Meanwhile, Cllr TP O'Reilly also requested an update form Transport Infrastructure Ireland on works proposed for the junction at Bailieborough road, Virginia. He believes a yellow box is "needed" at the junction.

His motion was supported by councillors S.P. O'Reilly and Trevor Smith.

Mr Connauhgton informed the council are "re-assessing" the junction "set up" and will get a consultant to look at the job.

"I hope they have better news that the last consultant," Cllr T.P. O'Reilly quipped, referring to the delay on the Virginia bypass.

"Don't shoot the messenger," Mr Connaughton replied.
