Upgrade facilities at Erica’s Fairy Forest - cllrs urge

Wheelchair users are being prevented from enjoying the popular Erica’s Fairy Forest attraction at Halton’s Amenity in Cootehill, close to the Monaghan/Cavan border, because of the poor condition of the pedestrian facilities on the County Cavan approach road, it was claimed by Fine Gael councillor Richard Truell at the February meeting of Monaghan County Council.

“The footpath on the County Cavan side is in a desperate state,” said Cllr Truell when moving a motion requesting the local authority to collaborate with Cavan County Council in examining the provision of additional car parking spaces at the amenity and improvements to pedestrian infrastructure in the area.

Cllr Truell called for consideration to be given to upgrading the existing Cavan side footpath and developing an additional footpath from the County Bridge to the Fairy Forest entrance.

“These measures will significantly improve pedestrian safety and accessibility for those visiting the Fairy Forest and Walkabout Café,” he added.

He said a wide range of activities take place in this location including a regular Saturday park run, and the area is also close to the Tanagh Outdoor Recreation Centre and the Dromore River system. Cllr Truell said a rising volume of visitors has increased traffic levels.

Improved parking and footpath facilities will help slow traffic, reduce congestion and create a safer environment for pedestrians, families and residents. “I believe a joint approach between both councils will be beneficial given the cross-county nature of the location,” he added. His motion was seconded by Sean Gilliland (FG), who observed that Erica’s Fairy Forest “is a victim of its own success in some ways”. He agreed that the infrastructure outside the amenity was in need of upgrading. Cllr Seamus Coyle (FF), supporting, praised the amenity but agreed there is a need to improve the services and facilities available for the safety of everyone.

The motion received unanimous support.
