A project to buy properties and convert them into social housing has received a €3 million boost in Cavan and Monaghan.
The programme focuses on buying second-hand homes to support individuals and families in the most difficult housing situations.
The 2026 'Second Hand' Social Housing Acquisitions Programme prioritises those leaving long-term homelessness, people at risk of losing their tenancy, people with disabilities, older people, young adults leaving care, and those supported under the Housing First initiative.
Deputy Brendan Smith said the increase in funding is a welcome boost for housing delivery locally and will strengthen Cavan and Monaghan County Council’s ability to respond to urgent need.
“This increased funding gives the councils more capacity to buy homes and support individuals and families in the most difficult housing situations."
He said the acquisitions programme plays an important role in meeting immediate demand, particularly where households are at risk of homelessness or need urgent support.
Meaningful impact
He added: "Schemes such as this can have a meaningful impact on families. I’m very encouraged to see the additional funding, and I will keep pushing for even greater investment. It’s essential that we put the right supports in place for people across our community. While continuing to build more homes is clearly vital, initiatives like this need to work alongside those efforts to truly make a difference.
The Fianna Fáil TD insisted that housing remains his party's "number one priority in Government".
"We must leave no stone unturned in our efforts to increase supply and making the dream of people owning their own homes a reality," he said.
Deputy Brendan Smith added that he will continue to advocate for sustained housing investment across Cavan/Monaghan.
