Irish language, bogs in Cavan and Monaghan receive heritage funding

A number of projects including a group water scheme will receive heritage funding

ALMOST €135,000 has been awarded to heritage projects in Cavan and Monaghan.

The funding, which was announced by the Minister of State for Heritage, Christopher O’Sullivan is being allocated under the Community Monuments Fund.

Among the projects who submitted successful applications for funding in 2026 are St Killian’s Heritage Trust in Co. Cavan and Muineachain le Gaelige in Monaghan.

While the St Killian’s project will receive €15,960 for their heritage centre, the Kilconny Bog Project has secured €38,883 for signage and bog day events.

In Monaghan, The River Blackwater Catchment Trust will benefit from two grants worth a total of €45,610 for phase 5 of the restoration of Sliabh Beagh and phase 3 of the Cor Bog restoration projects.

The total amount of funding for heritgae projects in Cavan and Monaghan is €134,844.

The Tydavnet Group Water Scheme has been granted €31,941 towards phase 2 of the Lough Antracier Catchment Peatland restoration project while Muineachain le Gaelige will benefit from €2,450 for Sé do Bheatha ar Slíabh Beatha: Comshaol agus Cultúr or “Life on the Mountain Environment and Culture”.

Welcoming the funding into the Anglo-Celt region, Cavan-Monaghan TD Brendan Smith said: “These projects are important in preserving and nurturing our local heritage and traditional crafts.

“I commend all involved in these worthy projects and I know that the support of the Cavan Heritage Office and the Monaghan Heritage Office is crucial in supporting and advocating for such local initiatives that bring benefits to each area.”
