Misuse of nitrous oxide 'no laughing matter'

The government was called upon to allow the passing of legislation to regulate the use of nitrous oxide at last week's council meeting.

Cllr Noel Connell (SF) said the gas gives a "quick high" effect however can have long term impacts on health, and mentioned a study whereby someone obtained a spinal cord injury "caused by" nitrous oxide.

He also said use of the gas can result in "nerve damage" or even "paralysis".

"It can be bought by the press of the button," he described.

He called upon the council to write to the government to regulate the sale and supply of nitrous oxide gas.

Cllr Damien Brady (SF) supported the motion, describing how the gas is also known as "laughing gas" but described the possible after effects as "no laughing matter".

While he said the gas does have "commercial uses", he said we "must keep it out of the hands of children".
