Safety assessments to be carried out on zebra crossings
The Monaghan Local Community Safety Partnership (LCSP) has urged the county’s three Municipal Districts to undertake safety assessments of all zebra and courtesy crossings, with any resulting recommendations to be acted upon. The call came through correspondence presented at this month’s meeting of the Ballybay–Clones Municipal District (MD).
MD Cathaoirleach Sinéad Flynn was congratulated on her recent appointment as Vice-Chair of the newly established Local Community Safety Partnership (LCSP). Speaking at the meeting, the Sinn Féin representative said she is eager to see long-awaited improvements to pedestrian infrastructure in Smithborough village and outside the SuperValu carpark in Clones.
Cllr Flynn highlighted concerns around both locations, stating that sightlines for motorists approaching the crossings were “far too short” and that lighting remained inadequate. She said these issues had been repeatedly raised by local residents and warranted immediate attention.
Reflecting on the recent public meeting held in the courthouse as part of the Community Safety Plan process, Cllr Flynn said the event was “a great success”, attracting strong community engagement. She also praised the Monaghan Women’s Assembly—of which she is Chair—for its previous public safety audits, noting their contribution to improving safety for people across the county.
