Female heroes at Laochra Academy

Afterschool with care for children's needs and creativity

Laochra Academy takes an innovative approach in creating a safe space for school aged children, The women-led service inspires each child to be the hero of their own story - an ethos reflected in the name Laochra, meaning ‘heroes’ as Gaeilge.

“Child voice is at the forefront of what we do, children are supported in developing their own values and social skills, in a familiar and welcoming environment,” founder Emer McVeety says.

Emer draws from over a decade of experience as a primary school teacher. Armed with a Bachelor of Education, and a Masters in Education and Training Management (Leadership), she infuses her work with a profound understanding of curriculum development and after-school activities. Her journey began with a desire to transform the school-aged childcare experience in the Cavan region, driven by her unwavering passion for child development.

At the heart of Laochra Academy is its exceptional team of 30 dedicated professionals, who design and deliver engaging activities tailored to each child’s needs. Their care, commitment and guidance ensure every child feels supported and valued. “We believe that all of our students should be active and engaged whilst in our care and we take pride in our impact on the community,” says Emer.

Services in Farnham NS, Killygarry NS, St Clare’s Primary School, Castletara NS and Drumkilly NS include before and afterschool care as well as school holiday programmes.

As a women-led service, Emer is immensely proud that Laochra is a finalist in this year’s SFA National Small Business Awards in the Services category. “We are notably the only Cavan-based business this year and are proud to represent.”

With the awards taking place in the RDS tomorrow (Thursday), March 5, Emer feels it especially fitting for a women-led service to be nominated, coming so close to International Women’s Day. “Particularly with our incredible team of women at the heart of everything we do.”
