Old Clones school comes on the market
MONAGHAN County Council has brought to market the charming Fortview School in Clones with a price tag of €150,000 attached.
Locals will be familiar with the charming turn of the 19th century schoolhouse in the Newtownbutler Road.
Its construction from craggy limestone and some of its unique features like a tower and gabled porch all add to Fortview School’s gothic appeal and gives it a presence more akin to a place of worship than a school.
The schoolhouse was designed by architect Thomas Elliott from nearby County Fermanagh who was noted for his work on religious and community buildings across Ulster and originally constructed in circa 1901.
Fortview School is among a number of protected and historically significant structures in Clones including the ancient High Cross, Round Tower and Abbey ruins, which, the selling agent, Monaghan Property Services Ltd (MPS) say “underscores the town’s rich architectural layers”.
The building, which, has been vacant for a number of year boasts an area of a150 m2 and includes two classrooms, two toilet rooms, hallway, staff offices and two entrances.
The entire site area extends to c.2500m2 (c.0.62acres), with the back portion c.1400m2, having a separate public road access.
Monaghan Property Services would like to advise anyone interested in Fortview School that it is offered subject to conditions of sale from Monaghan County Council.
“This spacious property stands proudly along one of Clones’ well-established residential routes and while it has been vacant for some time, offers an ideal canvas for refurbishment and modernisation,” a spokesperson for MPS said.
