€5.3m funding for Cavan / Monaghan home adaptation scheme
This year’s allocation represents an increase of €30 million for the scheme.
CAVAN and Monaghan will receive over €5.3 million for Housing Adaptation Grants.
The funding from the exchequer was announced by the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage today.
Funding is provided to local authorities to pay out Housing Adaptation Grants for older people and disabled people to assist those eligible living in private houses to make their accommodation more suitable to their needs.
Cavan will receive a total of €2,843,696 and Monaghan will have a total €2,488,816 to spend under this year’s scheme.
The suite of grants available to private home owners are 85 per cent funded by the Department of Housing with a 15 per cent contribution from the resources of each local authority.
Monaghan County Council will add €373,322 to the €2,115,494 provided by the state to bring the total available to spend in the county to €2,488,816.
In Cavan, the local authority will add €426, 554 to €2,417,142 from the exchequer.
Under the scheme, grants of up to €40,000 are available to assist people with disabilities in carrying out essential works to make their homes more suitable for their needs.
Grants of up to €10,700 are also available to support older people in carrying out necessary repairs or improvements to their homes, while grants of up to €8,000 are available for mobility aids.
In 2025, local authorities processed approximately 15,700 applications under the scheme, which, proving the demand for such a grant.
Local Fianna Fáil representatives welcomed today’s announcement from their party colleague and current housing minister, James Browne.
Deputy Niamh Smyth said housing adaptation grants “play an important role in helping older people and those with disabilities remain safe and comfortable in their own homes.”
Brendan Smith TD said: “These supports make a real difference for individuals and families by enabling people to maintain their independence at home and, in many cases, by supporting people to leave hospital sooner and return to familiar surroundings.”
