Obelisk ceases operations in Cavan

Twenty-four people have been affected after Obelisk ceased operations at their Cavan site today (March 31).

A source with connections to the engineering services company told the Celt former employees are "devastated" as they enjoyed their work with the company. Some employees have been with the company for over two decades.

Employees received official word of the regional closure on Friday, January 23 this year, via an email which was seen by the Celt.

The email states that with effect from April 1, 2026: ‘We will relocate all operations and services from our Cavan office to our Ballycoolin facility on an interim basis, pending confirmation of our new permanent premises.’

It goes on to state: "We are committed to managing the transition with care and clarity.’

‘This evolution aligns with the organisational structure of our sister company MJ Quinn, helping us drive greater efficiency and collaboration across the group.’

The Celt understands employees were called to a meeting in early February, when they were informed they could relocate to the Dublin facility, avail of statutory redundancy or work remotely with travel to the office.

Obelisk was acquired by Constructel Visabeira in 2022, a leading company in the global telecommunications and energy networks engineering sector. At that time, this newspaper reported there would be "no impact on staff at the Cavan office".

"In fact, the new acquisition means there will be plans to grow the team in the near future both in Cavan and further afield," a spokesperson said in 2022.

The company has previously won awards in ‘best managed’ categories. Efforts to contact the company yesterday were unsuccessful.
