Rolling protests in Cavan and Monaghan at fuel prices
Protestors in tractors, jeeps and cars are currently blocking the Dublin Road roundabout in Cavan Town, will tail backs mounting, though emergency service vehicles are being let through.
They gathered on the Cavan bypass near the Dublin road roundabout from around 7:30am this morning planning a rolling protest; while a similar protest is taking place on the bypass in Monaghan town.
Tail backs are beginning to build in both county towns.
They are protesting at fuel prices and the government's refusal, thus far, to lower taxes on fuels further while uncertainty in the Middle East prevails, oil prices soar and supply is impacted.
It's not clear at this point who has organised the Cavan protest and there was some confusion earlier at the site as to what exactly was happening, though a few people stepped forward and made a plan.
They decided on a rolling protest from the old Nissan garage roundabout, Dublin roundabout and Kilmore roundabout for one hour. The protestors are being co-operative with gardaí and say they will not block emergency services vehicles.
Raymond Heaslip, a farmer from Cavan, said that he decided to join this morning's protest because he is "disgusted" with the government.
Another protestor, Eoighan McClair, explains why he's there.
March
Earlier, around 7am in Cavan Town centre, all seemed quiet.
A poster shared multiple times on social media yesterday evening had advertised a protest.
It urged people to join them for a march from Cavan town centre to the Dublin Road roundabout.
It was billed as a "peaceful protest" and asked people to "stand up and be counted" and "make your voice heard".
Again it was not apparent who had produced the poster.
However, the event didn't materialise as advertised.
Gardaí told the Celt they were aware of the poster circulating on social media and local gardaí are monitoring the situation in Cavan this morning as it unfolds.
Meanwhile, in Monaghan Town protestors there have completely blocked the Dublin Road roundabout.
