Rug Rack Company jumping fences in the business world
Local Enterprise County Award Winner
A Monaghan-based business is making its mark on the global equestrian market after developing an innovative solution to a common problem faced in yards worldwide.
The Rug Rack Company was established to address the challenge of storing and drying horse rugs efficiently, safely, and without taking up valuable space.
“It was solving a problem in most people's yards at home,” explained owner Padraic Nolan, who initially had no plans to bring the idea to the commercial market. Instead, the concept was born out of necessity at his home in Emyvale.
The result was The Rug Rack — a power-assisted, flip-down storage and drying system designed to be space-saving, user-friendly, and suited to the demands of equestrian life.
Mr Nolan said his own experience highlighted the need for a better solution. “Existing solutions were bulky, inefficient, and often impractical for daily use and involved climbing on heights,” he said.
“I designed a smarter alternative, a system which my 11-year-old daughter could also use and ease of use was foundation for the design.”
He and his wife Kathy officially launched The Rug Rack Company in November 2023, following a period of testing in their own stable yard.
The product was first introduced at Cavan Equestrian Centre, where it was an instant hit. “We got off to a good start and got early traction within the Irish market when we launched the product, both from professional equestrians and also from amateurs,” Mr Nolan said.
Momentum continued to build after the company showcased at the Dublin Horse Show in 2024, generating strong international interest.
To support global expansion, the product was redesigned into a flat-pack format, allowing for more efficient shipping and straightforward assembly by customers. This enabled the company to develop a direct-to-consumer export model.
In its first full year of exports in 2025, The Rug Rack Company shipped to 45 countries worldwide, reflecting strong demand for the product. Turnover increased by 150% between 2024 and 2025.
The business has since secured official stockists in key markets including Australia, the Netherlands, Sweden, Portugal and South Africa, while continuing to grow its international reach through its online platform and Shopify account.
Following several visits to North America and the filing of design patents in both the United States and Canada, the company agreed a licensing deal for the region. The product launched there in January 2026 with System Equine Canada, an established supplier to the equestrian sector.
Looking ahead, The Rug Rack Company is focused on expanding beyond a single product, with a number of new innovations due for release in 2026 as it continues to build a scalable equestrian solutions brand.
In addition to its participating in the inaugural Monaghan Business and Tourism Awards, the Rug Rack Company is also looking forward to the finals of the National Enterprise Awards in the Mansion House next month, on May 22.
Organised by Ireland's Local Enterprise Offices (LEOs), the National Enterprise Awards celebrate the success of small businesses and feature 31 finalists representing each LEO, offering over €50,000 in prizes for achievements in innovation, exports, and sustainability.
