Liz Christy Hand-Weaving
Best Tourism Experience - Monaghan Business & Tourism Awards
Tell us about your business and team:
Liz Christy always believed in the potential of the business, even when she was advised against it: “I went to my bank manager at the time and he said to me ‘you’re swimming against the tide’ , because at that time everybody was outsourcing. But I couldn’t stand over my product if it wasn’t made in Ireland.” With that in mind, the hand-weaving studios in Annayalla were built with a view to it becoming a flagship for tourism in Monaghan.
Describe the best thing about your service:
Guests are not simply observing a demonstration - they step into a real working studio, meet Liz herself, and experience the craft as it happens. They see the looms in motion, hear the stories behind each design and feel the care and intention woven into every piece. It is this authenticity, warmth and sense of shared creativity that stays with visitors long after they leave - a true connection to Irish craft, to Monaghan, and to the hands that make it.
What’s the best business advice you’ve ever been given?
“Stay true to my craft and let my story lead,” Liz says. “By trusting my own voice, sharing the joy of my process openly and inviting people into my story.
What does the future hold for your business?
The future of business lies in deepening what Liz does best: Guided weaving experiences, storytelling and hands-on encounters will continue to grow, attracting visitors who seek something real and memorable. The future is about building around this craft - growing sustainably with a sense of place and continuing to create work that carries both story and soul.
