Person airlifted after N3 crash, road remains closed

N3 users are advised to expect delays, adhere to all diversion signage and allow additional travel time.

A N3 near Lavey remains closed this afternoon, and will remain shut to traffic until evening at the earliest, following a road traffic collision involving a car and a lorry.

One person, the driver of the car its understood, was airlifted from the scene to a Dublin hospital for treatment for serious injuries in the wake of the crash.

Units from An Garda Síochána, fire crews from Cavan and Ballyjamesduff, and multiple ambulances were deployed to the scene in a large-scale response following the accident, which occurred around lunchtime.

The busy N3 route remains completely shut near the Bent Elbow, with authorities warning that the closure could last until late tonight- and possibly even into tomorrow as garda crash investigators attend the scene.

A council spokesperson confirmed the seriousness of the situation, stating the road has been closed at the Lavey junction, with diversions in place.

“Following an earlier notice, motorists are advised that a section of the N3 after the Bent Elbow remains closed due to a serious road collision. The closure is expected to remain in place until late this evening, with the possibility that it may continue into tomorrow.”

Motorists are being rerouted in both directions:

Southbound traffic is being diverted at The Lavey Inn, travelling through Bailieborough before rejoining the N3 at Virginia.

Northbound drivers from Virginia and New Inns are being redirected via Ballyjamesduff and Crosskeys.
