Like bumper cars in local carpark

The surface of one of the busiest carparks in the centre of Monaghan Town is urgently in need of repair works, the April meeting of the Monaghan Municipal District was told.

The carpark, located off Glaslough Street, is adjacent to a major supermarket and a range of other retail outlets.

It was described by Cllr Alan Johnston (FG) as being “in a terrible state”. He said it is extremely difficult for anyone with shopping trolleys to use the carpark as it is cratered in places and needs urgent repair.

“This is our busiest carpark and it needs attention,” agreed Cllr Raymond Aughey (FF).

Cllr Seamus Treanor (Ind) called on the MD to make funding available for the carpark’s repair, stating that it has deteriorated into a desperate state.

Cllr Niamh McCooey (FF) suggested that the cost of the works required will be substantial. Cllr Treanor said motorists are experiencing “bumping car” conditions at present.

Cllr Pauric Clerkin (FG) agreed there is a lot of “public frustration” about conditions.

MD co-ordinator Martin Taylor said discussions have taken place with local businesses in relation to a Community Involvement Scheme.

He said the cost of the works required is more than €100,000, with no funding currently available.

Cllr Aughey encouraged pursuing the CIS route. “We are getting a huge amount of rates from the surrounding businesses and the job needs to be done,” he stated.

Mr Taylor said they will apply.
