Gowna win Football Championship

“There was never any question about whether the lads had the hunger to go again.” Gowna captain Conor Brady was confident, his team would show up to win the Cavan Senior Football Championship after losing by nine points to Kingscourt in the final 2025.

At halftime, Gowna were leading by 11 points. Kingscourt meanwhile looked like they were still in warm-up mode. The only one psyched up to the last was manager Colin Kelly who lost more calories shouting on the sideline than some of the players standing on the pitch.

Gowna started off comfortably, scoring four points in a row, before Kingscourt’s Jordan Morris stirred up with a two-pointer from the right. After a measured first ten minutes, the south Cavan team were finding into the game better and better, shifting into higher gears. Kingscourt was not able to keep up. Ten different scorers on the Gowna-side by half time highlight not only their ability, but also composure to make the right decision in play.

Kingscourt were struggling with spilt balls and a few wides. Their aim was simply off on this sunny Sunday afternoon. Of course, man of the match Mark Brady in goals for Gowna added his share.

After the break, Kingscourt scored the first point from a free which Gowna answered with a two pointer by Conor Casey.

Conor Brady had said before the match that Kingscourt “are a top side and they have been for the last number of years”. As such they didn't want to pay too much attention to the 11 point lead. However, they didn't have to show any urgency to score, took their time and even let Kingscourt play a bit, but set boundaries when they had to. It never looked like they were ever going to lose this match – despite Conor Brady having predicted a “tight battle”. But the closest Kingscourt ever came was 9 points. In the end, the scoreboard read 4-17 to 0-14.

Gowna and Kingscourt had met 4 times before in the final over the years, winning two each. This time, Gowna went home with the trophy.
