Backlash over rise in school bus fees
School transport fees are rising beyond a level that many families in North Monaghan can sustain, Cllr Bronagh McAree (SF) told the April meeting of the Monaghan Municipal District.
She received unanimous support for a motion calling on Education Minister Helen McEntee and her Department, in conjunction with Bus Éireann, to review recent school transport cost increases “which are placing a significant financial burden on families”.
For the forthcoming academic year, school bus fees have increased from €50 to €100 per primary school pupil; from €75 to €100 for secondary students; with a cap of €220 in place per household/family.
Cllr McAree said many families rely entirely on the Bus Éireann service as no alternative transport is available to them, and these homes are already under sustained pressure from the rising cost of living.
The SF representative added that people are heavily dependent on cars in rural areas and, with the high cost of fuel, the additional school transport costs are unsustainable.
“This issue is not just about cost but about access to education,” she stated. “The school transport system must be fair and available to all.”
The motion was seconded by Cllr Niamh McCooey (SF).
