Community come together with 213 tractors for SOSAD

A remarkable show of community spirit unfolded in Cavan as 213 tractors took part in a special fundraiser in aid of SOSAD Cavan, marking the largest turnout of its kind ever seen locally. The tractor run, held in memory of Damon Kelly, drew crowds from across the parishes, highlighting both the strength and compassion of the community.

“It is incredible to see the community come together. Unfortunately, it took a tragedy,” said Brendan Fay, local councillor and representative of SOSAD Cavan. He stressed the importance of fundraising efforts for the organisation, which operates without government funding. “We always say: If you want to talk, we are here to listen.”

SOSAD provides vital mental health supports through its drop-in centre in Cavan, its helpline (1800 901 909), and walk-and-talk initiatives, offering a lifeline to those in need of a listening ear.

Damon Kelly, the much-loved son of Mary and Martin, and brother to Paula, Christopher and Seamus, passed away on May 29, 2025 - “a loss that has changed our lives forever,” his family shared. In his memory, they organised the tractor run, which began at Tunnyduff Hall.

“This cause is very close to our hearts,” the family said, emphasising the need to break the stigma around mental health. “It’s okay not to be okay, but it’s not okay to suffer in silence.”

For those unable to attend, donations can still be made through the gofundme page, with all proceeds going directly to SOSAD Cavan.

At the time of going to print, over €8,000 of its €9,000 target had already been raised.
