Maria Edgeworth Festival In Edgeworthstown Co Longford, Celebrates 30th Anniversary with Vibrant Weekend Programme

The Maria Edgeworth Festival of Literature, Art and Movement will mark its 30th anniversary this weekend from May 15 to 17, with a dynamic and inclusive programme celebrating creativity, culture, and community.

Over the past three decades, the festival has welcomed visitors from across the globe, showcasing writers and artists of international acclaim while continuing to evolve and expand its offerings.

This milestone year promises to be one of the most exciting yet.

The festival will officially open at noon on Friday in the Library, with Her Excellency Kara Owen, British Ambassador to Ireland, presiding over the opening ceremony.

In collaboration with the National Library of Ireland and the British Council, the festival committee has developed a special joint art project.

The resulting exhibition will be on display in the Library throughout the weekend.

A diverse range of workshops will be available, catering to all interests and skill levels.

These include art, life drawing, poetry, short story writing, lace making, and Regency dance.

Festivalgoers can also enjoy a rich schedule of readings featuring acclaimed contributors such as Noelle Lynskey, Molly Twomey, Chele Crawley, Orfhlaith Foyle, and the Longford Writers Group.

For those interested in wellbeing, the programme includes yoga sessions and a talk on healthy eating.

Younger audiences are also well catered for, with face painting and a visit from the Midlands Reptile Zoo.

The festival will conclude on Sunday with the much-anticipated annual 18th-century Mostrim Tea Party on the Green.

This popular community event will feature an artisan market, poetry readings, and live music, offering a fitting finale that celebrates the town’s rich heritage.

Attendees are warmly encouraged to take part in Regency dress.

The Maria Edgeworth Festival would not be possible without the continued support of Longford Arts Services, Longford Tourism, Longford County

Council, generous sponsors, Paul & Vincent, C & D Foods, Rooney’s Railway Lodge B&B, Tully Pharmacy, and local deputy Michael Carrigy.

All are welcome to join in this special anniversary celebration and experience a weekend of literature, art, movement, and community spirit.
