Appelbee family to visit Dáil to meet State leaders

The Appelbee family, who hit the headlines earlier this year for their dramatic sea rescue in Western Australia, are in Leinster House today to meet with both the Taoiseach Micheál Martin and Tánaiste Simon Harris.

Joanne, Austin (14), Beau (13) and Grace (8) have been enjoying a heroes' welcome since they returned home to Ireland and Joanne's native Magheracloone a few weeks ago.

They were reunited with their family, the Cunninghams in Magheracloone, Carrickmacross, live on the last Late Late Show of the season on May 5. The family, who live in Perth, have been busy since RTÉ flew them home as a surprise; having also last week had a Civic Reception in their honour in Carrickmacross.

Fine Gael Deputy David Maxwell, who organised the Dáil visit, told the Celt: “I’m delighted to welcome Austin up to meet both the Taoiseach and Tánaiste in Leinster House today, with his mother and siblings, to congratulate him on his heroic efforts in saving the lives of his family. It was great to see him and the family honoured at a Monaghan Co Council civic reception last week, since the family have Monaghan roots. This is an add on, I’m delighted the family are coming up to find out more about the workings of Leinster House before they return to Australia. The Taoiseach and Tánaiste are both looking forward to meeting the Appelbees, who are now known internationally.”
